NEW YORK — Two prominent labor unions that supported Andrew Cuomo’s unsuccessful Democratic mayoral campaign are preparing to endorse rising democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani, as confirmed by two sources familiar with the situation to POLITICO.
The Hotel and Gaming Trades Council along with 32BJ SEIU, which advocates for building service workers in New York City, are planning to support the Democratic nominee while Cuomo considers the possibility of running as an independent.
"Kudos to @ZohranKMamdani for a significant win in the democratic primary for Mayor. We can all draw motivation from a hopeful and constructive vision of a New York that serves its working citizens. - a vision that has consistently inspired @32BJSEIU members," stated Manny Pastreich, president of 32BJ, on X Wednesday evening, just a day after the Albany lawmaker surprised the political scene by defeating the longstanding Cuomo dynasty on Tuesday.
This week, Mamdani had a meeting with HTC President Rich Maroko, as reported by a source familiar with the discussion.
Union representatives were not immediately available for comment.
These endorsements suggest that Mamdani is garnering institutional backing following his unexpected victory over the moderate Democratic former governor.
Next month, Mamdani is scheduled to meet with key business figures who have reservations about his tax and spending plans, as reported by NY1.
