Scottish actor Dominic McLaughlin has been seen in costume as Harry Potter for the first time as production kicks off.

The new TV adaptation of Harry Potter has officially started, with the first image of the lead actor in costume being released.

While JK Rowling's novels have already been adapted into films, HBO is now working on a TV series that is anticipated to take a decade to finish.

On Monday, producers shared the first image of 11-year-old Dominic McLaughlin dressed as Harry Potter and confirmed several new cast members.

Rory Wilmot has been cast as Neville Longbottom, Amos Kitson as Dudley Dursley, Louise Brealey as Madam Rolanda Hooch, and Anton Lesser as Garrick Ollivander.

They will join notable actors such as John Lithgow, who is set to portray Dumbledore, Nick Frost as Hagrid, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, and Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape.

The three child actors selected to portray Harry, Ron, and Hermione were announced back in May.

Filming for the series will take place at Warner Bros Studios Leavesden in Hertfordshire, the same location where the eight Harry Potter films were produced.

HBO has previously stated that the series aims to be "a faithful adaptation of the iconic books."

The TV series will have the opportunity to delve deeper into the storylines from the books without the time limitations faced by the films.

Producers also revealed new production team members, many of whom have worked on The Crown, including director of photography Adriano Goldman and hair and makeup designer Cate Hall.

The first season is set to premiere in 2027.
