Israel has agreed to conditions for 60-day Gaza ceasefire, Trump says

Israel has agreed to conditions for 60-day Gaza ceasefire, Trump says

Israel has consented to the "essential conditions" required to finalize a 60-day ceasefire in Gaza, as stated by US President Donald Trump.

In the context of the proposed agreement, "we will collaborate with all parties to conclude the War," Trump mentioned in a post on Truth Social, although he did not specify what the conditions entail.

"The Qataris and Egyptians, who have exerted significant effort to facilitate Peace, will present this final proposal. I hope... that Hamas accepts this Deal, as it will not improve — IT WILL ONLY DETERIORATE," Trump expressed.

Israel initiated a military operation in Gaza following Hamas's attack on October 7, 2023, which resulted in approximately 1,200 fatalities. Since that time, at least 56,647 individuals have lost their lives in Gaza, according to the health ministry controlled by Hamas in the region.

It was not immediately evident if Hamas would agree to the ceasefire terms.

Trump's announcement precedes a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu set for next week, where the US president has stated he would be "very firm".

On Tuesday, the US president expressed his belief that Netanyahu is eager to conclude the hostilities in Gaza.

"He wants to. I can assure you he wants to. I believe we will reach an agreement next week," Trump remarked.

On Tuesday, Israel's Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer was scheduled to meet with US special envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Vice President JD Vance in Washington.

Last week, a senior Hamas representative informed the BBC that mediators have intensified their efforts to negotiate a new ceasefire and hostage release agreement in Gaza, although talks with Israel are still at a standstill.

Israel has stated that the conflict will only conclude when Hamas is entirely dismantled. Hamas has consistently advocated for a lasting truce and a full Israeli withdrawal from Gaza.

Approximately 50 Israeli hostages remain in Gaza, with at least 20 believed to be alive.

Trump's remarks came shortly after Israel mandated evacuations in northern Gaza in anticipation of intensified military operations. According to medics and eyewitnesses, at least 20 Palestinians lost their lives in an Israeli airstrike on a beachfront cafe in Gaza City on Monday.

This week, the Israeli military also indicated that it was investigating reports of civilians being "harmed" while approaching aid distribution centers in Gaza operated by the US- and Israeli-supported Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF).

Over 170 charities and other NGOs have urged for the controversial organization to be shut down. Groups such as Oxfam and Save the Children claim that Israeli forces "routinely" fire upon Palestinians who are seeking aid.
Israel refutes this claim, asserting that the organization is essential to circumvent Hamas's interference in the distribution of aid.

In March, a prior ceasefire agreement fell apart when Israel initiated new strikes on Gaza. The Israeli military characterized this action as "pre-emptive strikes... predicated on Hamas's preparedness to carry out terror attacks, strengthen its forces, and rearm itself."

The earlier ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, which commenced on January 19, was designed to unfold in three phases but failed to progress beyond the initial phase.

The second phase involved the establishment of a lasting ceasefire, the return of any remaining living hostages in Gaza in exchange for Palestinians held in Israeli prisons, and the complete withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza.
