"It's difficult to believe that this day is actually happening. It still feels surreal," Kurtz remarked during a postgame television interview. "It's truly extraordinary. I'm somewhat at a loss for words. I don't really know how to express this."
This marked the 20th occurrence of a four-homer game in major league history and the second one this season. Arizona's Eugenio Suárez accomplished this feat on April 26 against Atlanta. No player has ever managed to hit five home runs in a single game.
Kurtz concluded the game with eight RBIs and six runs scored.
The 6-foot-5 power hitter has recorded 23 home runs in 66 games this season. Selected as the fourth pick in last year's amateur draft from Wake Forest, he made his major league debut on April 23 and hit his first home run on May 13.
He is now the youngest player to achieve a four-homer game. Pat Seerey of the Chicago White Sox was 25 years old when he hit four home runs on July 18, 1948.
